How to Get Your Small Business on Google: A Beginner’s Guide

Being found on Google doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are the practical steps every UK small business should take, in the right order.
How to Get Your Small Business on Google: A Beginner’s Guide

When someone needs a business like yours, the first thing most of them do is search on Google. If you don’t show up, you don’t get the call. Here are the steps that make the biggest difference for small businesses, in the order we’d do them.

1. Set up your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the local results with your opening hours, reviews and phone number. It’s free, and for local searches like “hairdresser near me” it’s often the most important thing you can do.

  • Choose the most accurate main category for your business.
  • Add your opening hours, phone number, website and service areas.
  • Upload real photos of your premises, team and work.
  • Post updates and offers from time to time.

2. Have a proper website

Your Business Profile gets you seen; your website convinces people to choose you. Make sure each main service has its own page that clearly says what you do and where, so Google can match it to the right searches.

3. Keep your details identical everywhere

Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook and directory listings. Inconsistent details confuse both customers and Google.

4. Ask for reviews

Reviews help you stand out and build trust. Ask happy customers straight after a job, and make it easy by sending them a direct link. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and promptly.

5. Make your website fast and mobile-friendly

Most local searches happen on phones. A slow, clunky site loses visitors before they’ve read a word.

6. Add Google Search Console

Google Search Console is a free tool that shows which searches your website appears for, how many people click, and any problems Google finds. It’s the best way to see what’s working.

7. Keep adding useful content

Answer the questions your customers ask you every day, such as prices, how long a job takes or how to choose. Helpful articles give Google more reasons to show your website.
